 Kaleici is a melting pot of eras and cultures spanning the last 2,000 years. Antalya's history began long before the birth of Christ. In 159 BC, the Pergamon King Attalus II of the Greek Attalid dynasty founded a new port city on the very edge of his kingdom. The city was named in honor of King Attalus. However, just 29 years later, the entire Pergamon kingdom came under Roman rule, and the city's development slowed for a time. In the 2nd century AD, the peak of the Roman Empire, Antalya itself and the entire Antalya region flourished. A stroll through the Old Town is like traveling through time, from Ancient Rome, Byzantium, the Ottoman Empire, and the formation of the young Turkish Republic. In Kaleici, we'll visit all the most significant and symbolic sites of Old Antalya (including the Yivli Minaret, the Gate of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, the Hıdırlık Tower, and Byzantine churches), wander the city's narrow eastern streets, visit the old port, and browse the shops selling the best Turkish delight in Antalya. Those who wish to extend their excursion can also take a boat cruise along Antalya's rocky coastline.
