Perge is the ancient pearl of Antalya, the most explored and richest ancient city in Antalya.
Its history began in the 7th century BC, during the Greek colonization of the Mediterranean coast. However, its heyday came in the 2nd and 3rd centuries, when the territory of Pamphylia belonged to the Roman Empire. It was during this period that Perge became the regional capital and was actively rebuilt. The theater, stadium, agora (central city square), Roman baths, fountains, water channels, and colonnaded streets—all were built during this period. And the most interesting thing is that you can now see all of this with your own eyes and stroll along the Roman colonnaded streets of the capital of Pamphylia.
It is also worth noting that Perge is the only city in Pamphylia that was decorated with a large number of marble sculptures of ancient Greek gods, Roman emperors and their wives (all 68 of the sculptures found in Perge are now on display in the Antalya Archaeological Museum).
If you're interested in the history of Pamphylia's "first city," want to stroll through authentic Roman streets, visit a Roman stadium, and a large Greco-Roman theater, then Perge is definitely the place to be...
