Excursion “Perge - Aspendos - Kursunlu”

Excursion “Perge - Aspendos - Kursunlu”

The excursion tour Perge - Aspendos Kursunlu is a great opportunity to learn many interesting historical facts, take a walk through ancient cities, admire the beautiful nature and amazing Turkey.

According to legend, the city was founded by the prophet Calchas after the Trojan War. To avoid raids from the sea, the city was founded 11 kilometers from the sea coast on the bank of the ancient navigable river Kestr (now Aksu).

In the 7th century BC the city passed to the Lydians, and then in the 6th century BC to the Persians.

In 333 BC it surrendered to Alexander the Great without a fight[1]. The city was then under the rule of the Seleucids and Pergamon.

In 262 BC, the city's most famous native was born: the mathematician and geometer Apollonius.

In 189 BC, as a result of the Antiochus War, Perge came under the rule of Rome[2].

During the Roman period, the city reached its greatest prosperity. In the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, Perge was one of the largest cities in Asia Minor, competing with Side for the title of the main city of Pamphylia.

In the 1st century, the apostles Paul and Barnabas preached in the city

During the Byzantine era, the Kestro River, the main artery connecting Perge with the coast, silted up, leading to the decline of the city.

In the 7th-8th centuries, Arab raids led to further devastation of the city. By the time the Seljuks arrived in the 11th century, a small settlement remained from the once rich city, which then disappeared completely.

Excavations have been underway at Perge since 1946, but much of the city is still buried underground. The oldest finds on the acropolis of Perge date back to the 5th millennium BC, and there has been a permanent settlement there since the 3rd millennium BC. The city is therefore much older than legends claim.

In 2009, Perge was included in the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Once one of the three largest cities in Pamphylia, famous for its racehorses, Aspendos is today a small town but a very important tourist center. It is home to the best-preserved ancient theater in Turkey (built in the 2nd century BC), which has hosted an annual opera and ballet festival since 1994.
